Holiday Traditions

I know it’s already a bit into December but I wanted to share with you guys a cute Christmas tradition that my family and I started this year for my daughter.

I originally saw it posted on Facebook, so the chances of most of you already seeing this are pretty high, but I though it was too good an idea to ignore.

24 book of Christmas!!

Basically you get your hands on 24 books. I bought mine at Savers for only $22 but new books can work too if you have the money for them.

So once you have them, you wrap them. Admittedly this was where I began to regret my decision since I HATE wrapping but it was pretty worth it.

Now place all of them under the Christmas tree, and beginning December 1st let your child pick one book a night to open. Spread out a comfy blanket under the tree and read together.

So far my daughter loves it and I’m pretty sure I’ll be doing this every year for many more years to come.

Are there any holiday traditions that your family does that you love? Have you started any of your own? I’d love to hear about them.

Hush little baby…

One of the things I enjoy most about my daughter, you know, besides everything, is her love for music. This is true for most toddlers I’m sure but it was not something I really thought of before she was born.

She loves to get up and move, she is even starting to try to sing a long sometimes when a tune she really gets into comes on. When I rock her to sleep for her nap or on nights I’m off from work, she hums with me until she drifts off. I don’t tell you this to brag (although I sort of am), I just want to give you a clear picture.

Through out my pregnancy I actually sort of worried about how she would be with music. I have such an eclectic taste along a broad spectrum of genres and I hated the idea of having to give up listening to some of them because they weren’t deemed traditionally appropriate for young ears. (Don’t laugh, I had more and one person tell me to my face that Disturbed was probably upsetting my then unborn child during my pregnancy.)

She loves Disturbed by the way. She also loves Dean Martin, Ed Sheeran, Bastille, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Vienna Teng, Fuel, Goo Goo Dolls, Gackt, Perfume (oh my god does she love J-pop), Disney music, Nahko and Medicine for the People, the Mr. Clean jingle, the list is endless really.

If nothing else it make it pretty darn easy to find a lullaby in a pinch. (She was lulled to sleep by Poets of the Fall just before I sat down to write this post for example.)

So for those of you embarking out on your own parenting journey don’t let anyone else tell you that your days are about to be filled with kiddy cartoons* and monkeys jumping on beds. Look back at them and say, hell no, my child will be raised on real music like Led Zeppelin and Lady Gaga thank you very much.

What’s some of the music you’ve been or are excited to share with your little ones?

*Okay, they’re not lying about the kiddy cartoons. Paw Patrol and Curious George rule over my TV just about 24/7.
