Well this year was a complete bust as far as keeping up with this blog goes. I know I’ve been on an extended hiatus but I thought it would good to pop in and share some of the awesome books I’ve read this year.
For 2018 I had set my Goodreads challenge at 48 and I’m happy to say that I managed to finish 50. (Well okay, as of this writing it’s actually 49 but I swear I will finish Kingdom of Ash before the clock strikes twelve even if it kills me!) I had also challenged myself to only read books written by women authors (with the exception of bookclub books) and I did fairly well with that as well. I even found myself a few more favorites along the way.
My Top 6 favorite reads of 2018
(I couldn’t narrow it down to just five.)
5. Spinning Sliver | by: Naomi Novik
I have been a fan of Novik’s writing since the first Temerraire books were published. To say that I was excited when I learned she was writing a book inspired by the Rumplestiltskin story would be a vast understatement.
This book was most certainly not a disappointment and has some of the best lady characters I have ever read. I’m already excited to reread it!
4. The Defiant Heir | by: Melissa Caruso
My book club read The Tethered Mage earlier this year and we were all enthralled by it so much we had to read the second in the series. More awesome characters, great story (political intrigue is the best!), and one imaginative world.
This second book took everything that was great from the first one and made it so much better. I can’t wait for the third book to come out this year.
3. The Grishaverse Trilogy | by: Leigh Bardugo
Yes I Know that this is sort of cheating but I can’t pick just one book out of this trilogy. Last year I read the Six of Crows duology and fell in love with this world. I hadn’t realized that it was part of a bigger series until after I was finished. I finally picked it up and was pretty underwhelmed with the first one but still in love enough to keep reading and thank goodness because the second and third books are where the heart of this series is (not to mention my favorite character, Nikolai).
King of Scars is almost here and I can’t wait!
2. Throne of Glass series | by: Sarah J Maas
Another series I can’t single out a single book for. This is the series I’ve been reading all year and for the most part I still have no words for it. It’s been one hell of a ride I have to say and I still have a bit more of the last book I need to finish!
1. Circe | by: Madeline Miller
This was a surprise. I had heard of Miller’s debut novel, Song of Achilles, but I hadn’t read it yet. I picked this as one of my Book of the Month choices because I thought it sounded interesting. Oh man, interesting is such an understatement for this book. It’s my favorite 2018 release and deserves every award that it has won so far.
1. The Night Circus | by: Erin Morgenstern
I couldn’t decide between this book and Circe so I decided to let them share my number one spot. The Night Circus is the only book that I’ve gone right back to the beginning and started rereading as soon as I finished it the first time. I’m really sad it took me as long as it did to finally read it.
Here’s to a new year and new stories to be discovered. Now if you’d excuse me, I still have a book I need to finish and only about another hour of the year to do it!!
